Our History

Fomerly Pomerado Road Baptist Church
Founded fifty years ago (October 1958) by Pastor Ed Lundwall as the Bible Baptist Mission, the church saw its first services in a tin-roofed farmhouse. Within two years the church had obtained the property it still holds, built a church building and changed its name to Pomerado Road Baptist Church.
Under the leadership of subsequent pastors, the church grew as the Lord blessed and attendance in the 1960’s and 1970’s ran to 1400 on Sundays. More buildings were built. Bus workers brought in hundreds of children each week to sing songs, learn from the Bible and hear the Gospel of Christ. These years saw much fruit in reaching the Poway community through many salvations and baptisms.
By 1980, Pomerado Road Baptist Church had become a much smaller congregation, but still faithful to serving the Lord. The church saw its next great challenge in working to keep the state of California from instituting taxation on churches. During those years, God’s man in the pulpit at Pomerado Road Baptist Church was Dr. Hans Nikoley. Traveling to meet with Congressional leaders, testifying, and working with the Christian Law Association, Pastor Nikoley was among a group of pastors who lead the fight against taxation. Eventually, they brought their case all the way to the President of the United States, then Ronald Reagan, who was quoted as saying, “Taxation of churches will not begin in my state!” It was not much later that the Governor of California passed a bill forbidding taxation of churches in the state of California. If not for the faithfulness and dedication to the fight of these few pastors, all churches in the state, if not by now the whole country would be taxed by the government.
Since October 2007, under the new leadership of Pastor Todd A. Shields, a young, energetic pastor of vision, membership has increased by over fifty families and several singles. The church has completed over four hundred thousand dollars of improvements which include; renovated buildings, forty new parking stalls, landscaping and installation of state-of-the-art media equipment, as well as, brought on new staff. In the fall of 2010 God enabled us to start Lifepointe Christian School, which offers classes beginning at K-3 through 12th grade. There is a sense that the Lord is doing mighty things here again.
In November of 2008, the church family voted to change Pomerado Road Baptist Church to the new name of Crosspointe Baptist Church. The same beliefs and purpose that the Lord has blessed for over fifty years remain, but with a new name. Crosspointe Baptist Church will always stand for the cause of Christ with a strong focus on reaching out to the surrounding communities with the Love of Christ. We believe God has the answers for the problems we face and He is ready to help, if we will only trust Him and believe His Word. We praise God for His goodness and blessings in sustaining us as a Gospel-preaching church for over fifty years and welcome all to worship and serve Him with us.
